What Is Cloud Gaming? Play PC Games in the Cloud with GenStream

Cloud gaming lets you play demanding PC games on a TV, phone or low-end laptop without a gaming PC. Learn how it works, the benefits, and what you need to get started.

What is cloud gaming?

Cloud gaming, also called game streaming, is a way to play where the game doesn’t run on your own device. It runs on a powerful computer in a data center, which streams the picture and sound over the internet to your screen like a video, while your input from a controller, mouse, keyboard or touchscreen is sent back to the server.

All the heavy lifting — 3D rendering, running the game, storing tens of gigabytes of data — happens on the server. That’s why a TV, phone or office laptop can still play PC games that need a powerful graphics card, as long as you have a stable internet connection.

How does cloud gaming work?

  1. You open the GenStream app or your browser and log in.
  2. GenStream gives you a Cloud PC: a Windows machine with an NVIDIA RTX GPU on our servers.
  3. The game runs on the Cloud PC; the picture and sound are compressed into video and streamed to your device.
  4. Every button you press is sent to the Cloud PC, and the game responds right there on the server.

Benefits of cloud gaming

  • No gaming PC needed: no graphics card to buy or upgrade — NVIDIA RTX GPUs from RTX 3060 Ti to RTX 5060 Ti are ready on the server.
  • No downloads, no installs: a 30 TB library of popular games is preinstalled, so you just launch and play; connect Steam to sync the games you own.
  • Play on the screen you already have: Android TV, Android phones, Windows, macOS, and Safari on iPhone and iPad.
  • No storage used on your device: games live on the server, and your saves are kept on the personal drive in your Cloud PC.
  • Pay the way you play: get a monthly plan, or top up your Credit Wallet and pay by the hour.

What do you need for cloud gaming?

  • A stable internet connection — 5 GHz Wi-Fi or a wired LAN connection works best. Use the Speed test in the GenStream app before you play.
  • A device with a screen: a TV, phone, computer or tablet.
  • A controller, a mouse and keyboard, or on-screen touch controls.
  • A GenStream account. The first time you play on an Android device, you get 3 free hours of play (up to 30 minutes per session).

Cloud gaming vs. PC or console gaming

With a PC or console, the power is in the machine you buy: picture quality doesn’t depend on your connection, but you pay for the hardware, upgrade parts, and wait for huge game downloads. With cloud gaming, the power is on the server: there’s no hardware to buy and you can switch devices and keep playing, but picture quality depends on your connection. If your home internet is stable, cloud gaming is a lightweight way to play demanding PC games without buying a new machine.
